Everything about pip value

What is a pip?

A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest unit of price movement in Forex. For most pairs, a pip corresponds to the fourth decimal (0.0001). For yen pairs (USD/JPY), it's the second decimal (0.01). Understanding pip value is essential for calculating your gains and losses.

Pip value by pair

On EUR/USD with a standard lot (100,000 units), a pip is worth $10. On USD/JPY, the value is approximately $6.50 because the yen is the quote currency. Precious metals have distinct pip values due to different contract sizes.

Impact of position size

The monetary value of a pip scales linearly with position size. With a mini-lot (0.10), a pip on EUR/USD is worth $1; with a micro-lot (0.01), it's worth $0.10. Adjust your position size so each pip has the desired impact on your P&L.

Why convert pips to dollars?

Thinking in pips allows you to compare trades across different pairs, but converting to dollars shows you the real impact on your account. This converter helps you quickly switch between the two.

Pips let you standardize your risk management across all pairs. By reasoning in pips risked (not in raw euros), you can compare performance between pairs, size your positions consistently, and apply the 1% rule methodically.
