Staking

Lock cryptos to secure a Proof-of-Stake network and earn rewards (3-15% APY depending on chains).

Staking means locking up your cryptocurrencies to participate in securing a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain and earn rewards in additional tokens. It's the crypto equivalent of an interest-bearing deposit, but secured by math rather than a bank.

How it works: on PoS chains (Ethereum since 2022, Solana, Cardano, Polkadot, Cosmos), validators are randomly selected to validate blocks proportionally to the tokens they've staked. Malicious behavior or errors trigger "slashing" (loss of part of the stake) — aligning incentives with network security.

Typical yields (2026):

  • Ethereum: 3-4% APY
  • Solana: 6-7% APY
  • Cardano: 4-5%
  • Cosmos: 15-20%
  • Polkadot: 12-15%

Ways to stake:

  • Solo staking: run your own validator. Ethereum requires 32 ETH (~$80,000 in 2026). Max yield, max technical responsibility.
  • Staking pools: Lido, Rocket Pool. Deposit any amount, receive a liquid token (stETH, rETH) representing your stake. Simpler, but ~10% fees and protocol risk.
  • Centralized exchanges: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken. Very simple but under SEC scrutiny in the US — legal risks.

Risks:

  • Unstaking period: 2-28 days depending on chain. During this time, tokens are locked and their price can fall.
  • Slashing: validator errors mean partial loss.
  • Smart contract risk on pools (Lido holds ~30% of staked ETH, posing centralization risk for Ethereum itself).
  • Token volatility: 5% APY doesn't save you if the underlying drops 50%.

Pro rule: only stake cryptos you plan to hold long-term. Staking isn't a way to speculate, it's a way to generate passive yield on strategic positions.
