Dogecoin, the joke worth $50 billion
Dogecoin was born in December 2013 as a parody. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, two engineers with no great crypto ambition, created a Litecoin fork with the famous Shiba Inu meme "Doge" and its broken English ("such wow", "very coin") as a mascot. The goal: mock nascent crypto speculation. Eleven years later, Dogecoin regularly weighs $30-50 billion in market cap and remains in the global top 10.
The Elon Musk factor
Dogecoin's fate flipped in 2020-2021 when Elon Musk started tweeting about it regularly. Each Musk tweet made DOGE jump 20-50 % in hours. Peak: May 2021 at $0.73 after his Saturday Night Live appearance (market cap $90B). Musk even temporarily replaced X (ex-Twitter) logo with Doge in 2023. The memecoin also benefited from Trump's 2024 election and the brief creation of the "DOGE Department" (Department of Government Efficiency) led by Musk in early 2025.
Technical characteristics
Technically, Dogecoin is very simple: Proof-of-Work blockchain derived from Litecoin (hence from Bitcoin), 1-minute block time (vs 10 for BTC), no supply cap — about 5 billion DOGE are issued each year. This perpetual inflation (~3-4 %/year) is often seen as a flaw, but it also discourages hoarding and favors daily payments.
Use cases and adoption
- Online tipping: Reddit, pre-2022 Twitter, streaming platforms used Doge for micropayments
- Tesla payments: Tesla accepts Dogecoin for some non-vehicle products (merchandise) since 2022
- NFL and sports: Dallas Mavericks and several sports franchises accept DOGE
- Main use is speculative: despite adoption, most DOGE volume remains speculative on exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, Robinhood)
Risks to know
Extreme concentration is risk number one: a single wallet holds ~20 % of total supply in 2026. If that wallet (likely Robinhood's user pool) moves, the market collapses. DOGE is also 0.8+ correlated with other memecoins (Shiba Inu, Pepe) and Musk's tweets — extremely speculative. Finally, the lack of clear technical roadmap means DOGE hasn't evolved like Ethereum or Solana — it's a "stable" asset in its design for 10 years, with both advantages and downsides.
